Wong Expected Back Soon

(Busch Stadium) While his 10 days is officially up today, the St. Louis Cardinals are looking for Kolten Wong to return from the disabled list later this week.

“I think though we’re pointing towards Thursday or Friday,” shared John Mozeliak, noting the second baseman will not go on a rehab assignment.

Sidelined since July 22nd with inflammation in his left knee, Wong has been participating in batting practice and infield drills during the homestand.

Mozeliak also confirmed the MRI showed no structural damage to Carlos Martinez, but the team does expect him to be out for 2 to 3 starts with the shoulder strain.

It has not yet been decided who will take his spot in the rotation, but Austin Gomber and Daniel Poncedeleon are the two leading candidates.

Reliever Dominic Leone is headed out on a rehab assignment beginning tomorrow and Adam Wainwright is also progressing in that direction.

“I still think he has another bullpen or two,” said Mozeliak of Wainwright.

Michael Wacha played catch again this afternoon and has yet to be cleared to progress to throwing bullpens.
