(Busch Stadium) Before the first pitch of the second half was even thrown, the St. Louis Cardinals have announced another health issue they’ll be working around as pitcher Adam Wainwright has been scratched from tonight’s start against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Daniel Ponce de Leon will start in place of Wainwright.
“He showed up yesterday and had a little spasm in his back,” Manager Mike Shildt explained. “We wanted to see how he recovered. He recovered ‘better’, we could’ve pushed it but we have the ability to have Ponce inserted to spot start and be rested and ready to on some pretty normal workload and rest. Made the decision to push him back, don’t think he’s going to skip a turn. I think you could potentially see him going in a couple of days.”
That “couple of days” for Wainwright could very well be Sunday in the series finale against Arizona.
In his last five starts heading into the All-Star break, Wainwright had a 3.07 ERA in 29.1 innings pitched with 31 strikeouts. It was more than coincidence that he and Dakota Hudson were slated to start the first two games back for the Cardinals.
“I think it’s reflective of how well they’ve pitched–get them back out there and get ’em going,” Shildt said. “”There was a lot of rest, matchups, just a combination of things that fed into why we set the rotation the way we did.”
“You make plans and things happen, that’s pretty normal. It just happened to be the first day out of the gate. The good news is our guys are capable of starting against everybody and everybody else is pretty much in line, so we’ll just see when Waino plays back in.”
