Wainwright Headed to Springfield

After recovering as desired from a bullpen yesterday, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright is ready to head out on a rehab assignment.

“I will be in Springfield on Monday,” confirmed Wainwright. “It was enough time that it made sense for everybody and it was fair for everybody, including myself, to go have a rehab start.”

The Springfield Cardinals (AA) will be hosting Tulsa early on Monday at Hammons Field. First pitch is 11:10am.

Wainwright, who has been on the disabled list since April 20th with right elbow inflammation, expects to throw 65-70 pitches in his outing.

“Fine tune, I want to fine tune things,” said Wainwright. “I’ve thrown a few bullpens now, just make sure everything is where it needs to be feel-wise and location-wise.”

–While Wainwright heads out on rehab assignment, it is likely Dominic Leone will be heading to the disabled list.

“We had to wait til today, he had that outside chance that it might have calmed down–but more information we got, realized that wasn’t gonna happen,” said Matheny. “Seems like it’s still good news in the fact structurally, there’s not an issue. But it’s still concerning with the nerve.”

Leone exited last night’s game after throwing just two warm-up pitches. His issue was initially described as a right biceps strain.

“I was told more nerve than anything else,” said Matheny. “Nothing structurally which you’re not talking about tendons or ligaments, which is all great.”

The Cardinals will not recall a player before today’s game, but Matheny shared they do plan to have another pitcher ready for action in the bullpen before tomorrow night’s game.
