The St. Louis Cardinals have announced reliever Sam Tuivailala has been placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a left knee strain.
The move is retroactive to April 10th, when Tuivailala pitched two scoreless innings of relief. He has appeared in four games total this season and allowed two runs on six hits.
In the corresponding move, pitcher Mike Mayers has been recalled from Memphis (AAA), where he was optioned on April 9th after beginning the season with St. Louis. Mayers made two appearances and allowed one run in his 2.0 innings pitched.
Following yesterday’s 7.0 inning performance from Adam Wainwright, manager Mike Matheny shared that the Cardinals “needed that really bad. We were short, short in the ‘pen. We only had so many innings of coverage.”
Mayers has not thrown since being optioned to Memphis, so he will provide a fresh arm if called upon as the Cardinals open their series tonight in Cincinnati.
