On the third pitch of his first at-bat, Oscar Taveras doubled and finished the game 1-3 as the St. Louis Cardinals tied the New York Mets 5-5 in split squad action on Friday.
Taveras had missed the first week of Spring Training games while he continued to rehab from ankle surgery, He had been physically cleared to participate in all baseball activity for some time, but in the last few days had been working through favoring the ankle to get the final okay from the training staff–and Manager Mike Matheny to play in a game.
Carlos Martinez threw three scoreless innings to start the game. Kolten Wong went 3-4 and drove in a pair of runs while Matt Holliday continued his hot streak with another three hits. The left fielder is now 8-9 in Grapefruit League play.
Meanwhile at Roger Dean Stadium, the Cardinals fell to the Marlins 7-3.
Adam Wainwright threw two scoreless innings but Lance Lynn was touched for five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Matt Adams went 2-3, including a home run in the losing effort.
