Prior to tonight’s game in Milwaukee, the St. Louis Cardinals have announced a series of roster moves which including placing both Mike Mayers and Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list.
Starting yesterday’s game in centerfield, O’Neill made an early exit from the game after making a hard throw which sailed over the head of catcher Yadier Molina in the second inning. He was pinch-hit for the top half of the next frame.
O’Neill has been diagnosed with a right elbow ulnar nerve subluxation.
According to orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. David Geier, ulnar nerve subluxation is a condition where “the ulnar nerve slides back and forth from its normal position behind the medial epicondyle (the bony prominence on the inside of the elbow) to in front of it. Snapping of the nerve with motion of the arm is uncomfortable along the inside of the elbow and forearm.”
Mayers also left the game early, experiencing some discomfort in his shoulder and was unable to finish the 6th inning. He has been diagnosed with a right shoulder lat strain.
As a result, the Cardinals have recalled infielder/outfielder Yairo Muñoz, right-handed pitcher Giovanny Gallegos and rookie right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley from Memphis (AAA). The team also optioned infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson to Memphis.
The 24-year old Helsley will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance. He was 0-0 with a 3.86 in two starts for Memphis this season with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.
Muñoz wears uniform no. 34, Gallegos no. 65 and Helsley no. 56.
