The St. Louis Cardinals have their full 40-man roster under contract for the upcoming season as the team announced today their agreement with 20 players on one-year contracts for 2019. Pitchers Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks also had their contracts renewed.
Before last season, the Cardinals and Tommy Pham were unable to come to an agreement and the outfielder had a his contract renewed. Pham was eligible for arbitration after the season. Flaherty and Hicks will not have that option until 2021 and free agency in 2024.
“I am a ways away from free agency,” discussed Flaherty back at the Winter Warm-Up. “But I’ve tried to educate myself on what’s going on and where we’re at in the rules and how it goes. So for me I like to know what’s going on. I don’t like to just hear things and not really understand. I’ve tried to take the time to understand what’s gone on, where everybody is at, why guys aren’t signing, why guys aren’t getting paid what they should be, or everything that is kind of going on.”
Flaherty led the Cardinals with 182 strikeouts last season and was second to Miles Mikolas with 152.0 innings pitched. Hicks earned six saves and struck out 70 batters. Both players are expected to play key roles in 2019 for St. Louis.
“For me I’m just focused on this next year right now,” Flaherty added. “I can’t – it starts and ends with baseball, like I said. For me I’m looking forward to this year, put in all the work that I possibly could this offseason. Came up short. Didn’t make the playoffs. Had to watch all of these teams play. Didn’t love that. Haven’t loved it the last two years. At the end of the day I just go back to controlling what I can control. And if at some point it becomes something that I can control then it becomes more something that I can pay attention to.”
Per the CBA, each team has the right to set the salary for a player with less than three years service time provided it meets the minimum, which for 2019 is $555,000–up $10,000 from last season. The Cardinals typically award salary increases for these players based on internal calculations.
The following pitchers with zero to three years of service time came to agreement on their new one-year contracts with St. Louis: John Brebbia, Génesis Cabrera, Giovanny Gallegos, John Gant, Austin Gomber, Ryan Helsley, Dakota Hudson, Mike Mayers, Daniel Ponce de Leon, Alex Reyes and Tyler Webb. Infielders Yairo Muñoz, Drew Robinson, Edmundo Sosa, and Ramŏn Urias agreed to their deals, as did outfielders Harrison Bader, Adolís García, Tyler O’Neill, Lane Thomas, and Justin Williams.
