Inspired by the passionate hockey fan in Seinfeld, Adam Wainwright literally bore patriotic colors as he arrived in the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse Sunday morning. The red, white, and blue face paint a show of support for Team USA’s soccer game later in the day.
“Besides our game, it’s the biggest game of the day—biggest game of the year, 5pm eastern time, USA-Portugal—let’s do this,” promoted Wainwright. “All these other people from all the other countries are getting fired up, and painting their face and wearing flags, and all that. It’s time for the United States to stand up and be patriotic too, I think.”
“I went to the World Cup in 1994 in Orlando and saw the Netherlands and Ireland play. Almost quit baseball for soccer—I’m a soccer fan.”
Wainwright’s wife, Jenny, was the artist for his face-paint—which he kept on during pregame. Asked how he could top the face paint on July 4th… “I’m getting a red, white, and blue suit made—I’m kidding,” quipped Wainwright.
