(Busch Stadium) As the five games in less than 52 hour Labor Day stretch continues for the St. Louis Cardinals, Mike Shildt is returning to a familiar lineup to open today’s series against San Francisco:
RF Dexter Fowler
2B Kolten Wong
1B Paul Goldschmidt
LF Marcell Ozuna
SS Paul DeJong
C Yadier Molina
3B Tommy Edman
CF Harrison Bader
P Adam Wainwright
“I applaud them, first and foremost, for how they’ve taken care of their bodies and their mindset going into the weekend,” Shildt said. “All the support systems, people do their jobs–but they should be rewarded for doing a good job. Taking care of the nutrition and all the different things performance related and medical. We’ll play today, but everybody’s in a good frame of mind and everybody says they feel great.”
–Catcher Matt Wieters had a walking boot near his locker as he continues to deal with the mild calf strain which forced him out of the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
“He had a shot,” Shildt shared. “Just stabilizing it. He’s actually in a very optimistic place relative to what he’s dealing with.”
An exact timetable for Wieters’ availability remains unclear.
“24-48 hours with the shot, but we’re as encouraged as we can be with what he’s dealing with,” Shildt said.
–Infielder Edmundo Sosa, originally scheduled to be called up tomorrow from Memphis (AAA), has joined the active roster.
“Just making sure, we’ve played a lot of games and if we had a chance to give a guy a blow we’d give it,” Shildt explained. “Just for coverage. They did a heck of a job making a push at it, but getting him and getting him an opportunity if it presents itself.”
Sosa made his MLB debut last September with St. Louis and appeared in three games earlier this season.
Outfielder Randy Arozarena is still scheduled to join the Cardinals tomorrow.
