(Busch Stadium) After spending the last 10 days on the disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation, Marcell Ozuna has been activated and is available in tonight’s game for the St. Louis Cardinals.
“He’s progressed well, really well,” said Mike Shildt. “He’ll be on the bench today, coming off to pinch-hit. Be available in that role and everything checks out and continues to move forward, he’ll be available for the lineup tomorrow.”
Ozuna was in the midst of a 5-game hit streak when he went on the disabled list. During the stretch he was hitting .389 (7-18) with a pair of home runs.
As previously announced, the Cardinals also added catcher Carson Kelly and pitchers Daniel Poncedeleon and Tyler Webb to the active roster. Poncedeleon starts tonight’s game and Webb is available out of the bullpen. Kelly now offers St. Louis a chance to use either himself or Francisco Pena as a pinch-hitter besides backing up Yadier Molina.
“I think we’ll just evaluate as we go,” explained Shildt on who will be first off the bench. “It’s hard to answer in absolutes, just based on there’s so many different variables that can take place in a game that you just need to think about in a different way…they both bring skill sets that can contribute.”
