(Busch Stadium) A day after busting out the “M” in Big Mac Land with his 22nd home run of the season, St. Louis Cardinal Paul DeJong had another treat for his teammates–this one they could eat.
“They provided our team with a bunch of free Big Macs,” said DeJong, who delivered the boxes around the clubhouse to each locker.
A blank space is on display where the M used to be while the sign is being repaired, which will not come out of the shortstop’s salary.
“I think McDonald’s is going to pay for this one for some advertising,” DeJong smiled.
The home run was a line shot that traveled an estimated 398ft before knocking out the lights in the signage with a crash into the M. It was his first home run at Busch Stadium since June 6th.
“I saw it go up,” DeJong said. “I thought it was going to be up there and then I didn’t see the ball come down, reasonably so because it was stuck in the M. It was just kind of funny. I couldn’t do that again in another million tries.”
And while the hamburgers will be tasty, there’s one other thing DeJong would welcome.
“I did not get the ball,” he said. “I don’t know where the M is or the ball, but I’d be happy to take either one.”
