St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina officially began his rehab assignment with the Memphis (AAA) tonight, spending four innings behind the plate as the Redbirds lost 6-1 to El Paso. Molina dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the second inning for his only plate appearance.
Molina is scheduled to play tomorrow for Memphis as well and then be re-evaluated. On Thursday, St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said it was not expected that Molina would be back with the team in Los Angeles, setting up a possible return on Friday, August 9th as the Cardinals open a homestand at Busch Stadium.
A day after going 2 for 3 at the plate, Matt Carpenter was 0-2 with a walk and strikeout on the night. Harrison Bader also had a pair of hits on Thursday, but was 0-4 this evening.
Outfielder Randy Arozarena did not play in the game. Earlier today he was honored as the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for July. In the 26 games for the month, Arozarena hit .378 with three home runs, 10 doubles, 14 RBI, and three stolen bases. He reached base at a .455 clip and slugged .592 during the month, posting a 1.047 OPS.
Even more impressive, after being promoted to Memphis in June, Arozarena has hit .379 (66-174) in 45 games at Memphis.
