St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is expected to miss the next four weeks after undergoing surgery for a pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma.
Molina sustained the injury in the 9th inning of yesterday’s game when Kris Bryant foul tipped a 102mph fastball from Jordan Hicks. The foul tip deflected directly to Molina’s groin area.
Through 30 games this season, Molina was batting .272 with 6 HR’s and 17 RBI and recently passed Johnny Bench on Major League Baseball’s all-time games caught (1,745) and innings caught (14,627.0) lists.
The Cardinals have recalled catcher Carson Kelly from Memphis (AAA) and also pitcher Mike Mayers–who will take the place of reliever Dominic Leone, who has been placed on the disabled list with right nerve irritation.
Both players will be available for tonight’s game against the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is 7:05pm on ESPN.
