Molina Back in Action

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that catcher Yadier Molina has been activated from the 10-day injured list and rookie Andrew Knizner has been optioned to Memphis (AAA).

Out for the last 11 games, Molina had been dealing with a right thumb tendon strain. He joined the Cardinals in Miami yesterday

Currently in fifth place among National League catchers for the All-Star primary, Molina (202,401 votes) was leading all ML catchers in games played (50), innings caught (416.2), RBI (33), hits (50), doubles (13) and stolen bases (4) at the time of his injury.

Knizner made two starts behind the plate, both starts with Adam Wainwright, and recorded a 2.65 catchers ERA. He also threw out his only attempted base stealer. In seven at-bats, Knizner is still looking to collect his first big league hit.

The Miami Marlins have recalled pitcher Elieser Hernandez, who will make his first start of the season (seventh career) tonight against the Cardinals. The right-hander has has two career relief appearances against St. Louis, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA (1.1 IP/1 ER).

THOMPSON SIGNS

–The Cardinals also announced the signing of their top draft pick (#19 overall) Zack Thompson this afternoon. The 21-year old left-hander stopped by Busch Stadium to sign his contract and will now head to Jupiter, FL to be assigned a a minor league affiliate.

In his three seasons at Kentucky, Thompson put together a record of 16-5 with a 3.20 ERA with 268 strikeouts in 196.2 innings.
