Miller Moved to Bullpen

Emphasizing the move is to provide rest, not because of performance, Mike Matheny announced Shelby Miller has been moved to the bullpen as the St. Louis Cardinals will use a four-man rotation for the time being.

“Part of the plan from the beginning was to get him rest when we could and this is a good opportunity,” explained Matheny. “As far as how we use him, it’s how we need him.   He’s a guy that can go long if we needed him to, but we have some other guys who can cover. We have a fully rested bullpen so we’ll be watching and just kind of waiting to see. He can come in and throw an inning, he’s just not going to be needing to go every fifth day.”

Adam Wainwright will make his next start on Tuesday in the series opener against Tampa.

“I think they’re just being real cautious of making sure I’m going to be prepared to go the rest–because this is going to be a pretty torrid race through the end of the season,” said Wainwright, who is feeling fine and no ill-effects from the elbow tendinitis that forced him to miss a start earlier in the year.

“No, the back of my forearm–which was incredibly painful for a couple starts, after I took that time off has been great since.”

The Cardinals have three of their next ten days off, but Matheny was not ready to say the four-man rotation with Miller in the bullpen would be for the entire month. He did acknowledge the schedule would allow for such a schedule through the end of the month.
