Mikolas An All-Star

Signed as a free agent this past December by the St. Louis Cardinals, there was a question if Miles Mikolas would be able to translate his success in Japan back to the big leagues. Now after putting together a record of 9-3, he has been chosen to represent the National League in the 89th MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 17th in Washington, D.C.

Asked on more than one occasion over the last couple of weeks, Mikolas downplayed the notion saying only that it would be a great honor. With it now being official, he elaborated a bit more on his feelings with the media postgame in San Francisco.

“I’m pumped,” he smiled. “I’m super-excited to be a part of it. I think it’s great for me and my family. It’s going to be a dream come true to represent the Cardinals at the All-Star Game. Growing up, going and watching their games, the Spring Training games, and now to represent them at this game–it’s a dream come true.”

This is the first All-Star selection for Mikolas, who has a record of 9-3 on the season and ranks amongst the Top 10 in the National League in wins (5th), ERA (7th), innings pitched (9th), and WHIP (5th). He is also one of only five NL pitchers to throw a complete game and/or shutout this season.

As it stands, Mikolas will be the lone player representative for the Cardinals, although Matt Carpenter is one of five Final Vote candidates in the NL that will be left up to fan balloting.

Click here to vote for Matt Carpenter or others in the Final Vote. Voting is open until 3pm CT on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Pete Prinzi, the Cardinals Strength and Conditioning Coach, who was chosen to serve the same role with the NL All-Stars.
