Memphis Returning to Championship

For the second consecutive season, the Memphis Redbirds will compete in the Pacific Coast League Championship as a 10th inning walk off hit from pitcher Giovanny Gallegos gave them a 4-3 win over Oklahoma City.

The at-bat was just the second in the seven-year career of Gallegos and capped off the Redbirds three runs scored in the inning for the comeback victory. Tommy Edman and Alex Mejia each drove in a run for Memphis, which will now await the winner of El Paso vs. Fresno series.

The game was started by Mike Mayers, who allowed just one hit in his 1.0 inning of work. He threw 12 pitches, 9 of them for strikes.

The Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, Memphis has gone 174-104 combined over the last two regular seasons.

–Congratulations to Fredbird, who was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. The official mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals, Fredbird made his debut in 1979 and has seen his role grow from performing in games to include community appearances and team television programming.

Former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Andy Van Slyke, St. Louis Blues winger Keith Tkachuk, and auto racing great (and huge Cardinals fan) Kenny Wallace will be among those inducted in the formal ceremonies on September 26th.
