It has been a message readily heard within the St. Louis Cardinals organization–“you’re only a phone call away”.
After answering the call for eight starts in 2013, Tyler Lyons will do so again later tonight in New York.
With Joe Kelly on the disabled list, he has been recalled from Memphis (AAA) to start Monday’s game against the Mets.
Kelly injured his hamstring last Wednesday–the same day Lyons went seven strong innings for Memphis, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out six. Overall, Lyons has a line of 2-0, 3 GS, 19 IP, 16 H, 7 ER, 7 BB, and 20Ks this year.
“That’s what I felt like made or broke me,” explained Lyons during Spring Training on trying to improve his fastball command from last season. “It was never slider or curveball wasn’t there—whether that’s there or not, fastball command is what sets everything up. For me, that was a big deal this offseason—focus on being able to move the fastball around and being able to have it every day.”
The lefty was also working on incorporating a sinker to his glove side. “Trying to bring it from off the plate, bring it back a little bit.”
To make room on the 25-man roster, the Cardinals optioned pitcher Jorge Rondon to Memphis.
