After fulfilling a childhood dream and playing for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals, first baseman Luke Voit will now continue his career with another storied franchise as he has been traded to the New York Yankees.
The Cardinals announced the deal this evening, which sends Voit and International Cap space dollars to New York in exchange for relief pitchers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallego.
Bringing his motto of “Bombs and Doubles” to St. Louis last season, the Lafayette High School and Missouri State alum made his MLB debut by hitting .246 (28-114) with 4 home runs and 18 RBIs in 62 games.
Voit also showed an ability to hit off the bench, hitting .303 (10-for-33) with HR.
This season, Voit garnered only 11 at-bats in eight games with St. Louis, but was hitting .299 at Memphis (AAA) with 9 HRs and 36 RBIs.
The 28-year old Shreve has appeared in 39 games for the Yankees this season and has a record of 2-2 with a 4.14 ERA.
The left-hander has struck out 46 batters in his 37.0 innings pitched.
Overall in his career, Shreve has appeared in 194 career games with Atlanta (2014) and the Yankees (2015-18), going 14-6 with a 3.68 ERA.
A 26-year old right-hander, Gallegos has appeared in four games this season and 20 overall for New York. He was 2-1 with a 3.90 ERA for Scranton Wilkes-Barre (AAA) this season in 17 games, striking out 41 batters in 27.2 innings pitched. He will be assigned to Memphis.
