Following today’s game, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny announced the day’s starter, Joe Kelly will be staying in the rotation.

With Kelly winning the job in the rotation, Carlos Martinez–who had a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched this spring, will open the season as the 8th inning set-up man in front of closer Trevor Rosenthal. Martinez remains very much in the mix to be a starter in the near future–especially with the return of Jason Motte early in the season.

The team also announced infielder Greg Garcia has been optioned to the Memphis (AAA) roster and infielder Luis Mateo has also been re-assigned to Minor League Camp.

Pitcher Angel Castro was out-righted off the team’s 40-man roster to Memphis.

Combined with the day’s earlier moves of Sam Freeman and Joey Butler being optioned to Memphis, and Aledmys Diaz being optioned to Springfield (AA) the Cardinals now have 29 roster players and six non-roster players remaining in their Major League Camp.

With both Jaime Garcia and Motte expected to open the season on the disabled list, it appears Keith Butler, Jorge Rondon, and non-roster invitee Pat Neshek are three pitchers for the last two spots on the pitching staff. Prospect Scott McGregor also remains in big league camp.

An additional spot could be open if one of last year’s contributors (Seth Maness) were to be optioned to Memphis to be stretched out as a starter–although that does not seem likely.

On the position side of the roster,  outfielder Randal Grichuk remains in camp with NRI’s catcher Ed Easley, infielders Scott Moore, Xavier Scruggs, and outfielder Stephen Piscotty.

All of the above have represented themselves well, but the decision for the final roster spot for a position player seems to come down to a decision between Pete Kozma and Shane Robinson.
