(Busch Stadium) After deliberation about getting creative for the opening in their rotation, the St. Louis Cardinals are sticking with two of their existing arms to pitch against Kansas City.
“We’re going to go with Jack on Tuesday and Dak on Wednesday,” Mike Shiltdt announced. “Jack on six days and Dak coming back on five days, but threw 49 although a little higher leverage. That’s what we’re going to go with.”
While the off-days in the schedule were favorable for this decision, the Cardinals will need an additional starter during their four-game series at Cincinnati.
“I imagine Michael will take that start, but we’ll still look at all the possibilities,” Shildt said.
In his last start on August 5th, Michael Wacha allowed a pair of home runs and six earned runs in 3.2 innings. He is 5-5 in 15 starts this season. In seven of those, Wacha has allowed 3 runs or less. However, in five of the other eight starts he has given up at least five runs.
For now, Wacha remains available out of the bullpen.
The return of Yadier Molina to the active roster on Tuesday is “very likely” according to Shildt, who did not want to elaborate on what the roster implications could be.
