As expected, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that catcher Carson Kelly and pitcher Tyler Lyons have been activated from the disabled list and are eligible to play in this afternoon’s game against Pittsburgh.
What was not expected was the placement of Greg Holland on the 10-day disabled list.
When asked if there were any physical issues that could be contributing to his struggles, Holland had been steadfast over the last couple of weeks that he was fine. However, the reliever has been diagnosed with a right hip impingement.
In 18 appearances this season, Holland has a record of 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in 13.1 innings.
Returning from a right hamstring strain, Kelly caught two games on rehab assignment for Memphis (AAA), including Alex Reyes’ 13-strikeout performance on Thursday. Last night, Carson went 3-3 with a double and run scored.
Lyons also had a pair of rehab outings, both with Springfield (AA). He threw six pitches for a save on May 19th and followed with allowing two runs on May 21st.
Besides the placement of Holland on the DL, catcher Steve Baron was optioned to Memphis in the corresponding roster move. Baron made one start for the Cardinals after being recalled on XX and garnered his first MLB hit on May 19th.
