The St. Louis Cardinals have taken the next step in trying to “salvage the season”, as a series of roster moves were announced today by the team.
Relievers Greg Holland and Tyler Lyons have been designated for assignment, meaning the Cardinals now have 10 days to work out a trade or the players will be granted their release.
Reliever Sam Tuivailala has been traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league pitcher Seth Elledge.
Reliever Brett Cecil has been placed on the 10-day disabled list (right foot inflammation) retroactive to July 23rd.
To fill those active roster spots, the Cardinals have recalled pitchers Daniel Poncedeleon, Luke Weaver, and Tyler Webb from Memphis (AAA). The team has also purchased the contract of pitcher Dakota Hudson from Memphis.
A 22-year old right-handed pitcher, Elledge was 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 9 saves in 31 games for Modesto (A) this season. He has struck out 54 batters in 38.1 innings and was named a California League All-Star. Elledge has been assigned to Springfield (AA).
