Gyorko Starts Today

Offering praise for Kolten Wong reaching base a couple of times last night and playing consistent defense all season, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny explained it was just a day off for the second baseman while Jedd Gyorko gets the nod in the starting lineup.

“Jedd’s gotta play too,” stated Matheny. “Huge game-winning hit for us yesterday and it’s been a couple of days since he had a start. Just trying to keep all these guys going is a tough challenge.”

Gyorko entered last night’s game as part of a double-switch in the 7th inning. And as noted, after a rain delay and Cincinnati tied the game, he drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th off Raisel Iglesias.

“He’s one of the best, there’s no doubt about that,” said Gyorko. “He threw me a bunch of sliders early and he actually gave me a couple towards the end of the at-bat that were good pitches to hit and I just fouled them off. Then he left a fastball up and I was able to put a good swing on it and it snuck through.”

The win moved the Cardinals to 5-5 in extra inning games in 2018.

“If we would’ve lost a game like that, those losses are tough,” acknowledged Gyorko after last night’s win. “We felt like we had the game the entire time, so it was a game we needed to win.”

On the season, Gyorko is now hitting .400 with RISP (10-25) and would rank 3rd in the National League but does not have enough at-bats to qualify for the league leaders.
