(Busch Stadium) The St. Louis Cardinals will have an extra arm available for tonight’s game against San Francisco, as right-hander Giovanny Gallegos has officially been recalled.
“He did a nice job for Memphis,” said Mike Shildt. “He helped anchor the end of that bullpen for them at the end of their season. Stubby (Clapp) was complimentary of him.
Gallegos actually received the news of his call-up on September 18th as he celebrated winning the Triple-A National Championship with his Memphis teammates.
“We’ll evaluate him here and give him an opportunity when it presents itself,” said Shildt.
Acquired in the Luke Voit trade with the New York Yankees, Gallegos went 0-0 with a 0.54 ERA in 13 games for Memphis. Overall, he was a combined 2-1 with a 2.64 ERA in 30 games between Memphis and Scranton Wilkes-Barre (AAA) this season.
The scouting report for Gallegos has his velocity around 95-96mph on the fastball to go with a sharp slider.
“Wanted him to understand what St. Louis is about,” said John Mozeliak. “You look at what he was able to do for Memphis and how he contributed, I do think he’s someone we can use here.”
Gallegos has been assigned uniform number 65.
–Former St. Louis Cardinals reliever Matt Bowman posted pictures to his Twitter account of his hand recovering from surgery with a shoutout of thanks to Dr. Robert Hotchkiss for performing the procedure.
“Feedback I got was that he is feeling better,” said Mozeliak. “I think I’ll have a better answer on that in about a month, month and half, once he’s able to start a throwing program. But he’s encouraged.”
Besides dealing with blisters, Bowman also had some circulation issues in his right fingers this season which limited his availability and effectiveness. He was optioned to Memphis in early July and last appeared in a game on August 12th, throwing a scoreless inning for the Redbirds.
