Edman and Ravelo Starting

(Busch Stadium) The St. Louis Cardinals have a different look to their lineup tonight as they host Miami in the third game of their four game series with the Marlins. Rookies Tommy Edman (second base) and Rangel Ravelo (first base) will be making the first starts of their big league careers.

“Very much-earned,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “They’re good players, they belong here.”

Having made his debut on June 8th, Edman has scored three runs in his last two games and doubled for his first ML hit this past Friday. Ravelo has a walk and groundout in two plate appearances.

The lineup changes also allow for a different look to an offense that was held to two hits last night, as well as some rest as the Cardinals are playing their fourteenth of eighteen straight days since the rainout on June 5th against Cincinnati.

This is the second game of the week Paul Goldschmidt is not starting, who also did not start on Saturday in New York.

“With a day game on Sunday, we picked our spot there plus we wanted him on the field with Dakota, a sinker ball guy, so that was more rest oriented. Today is more just a little–take a blow, man. Take a little bit of a reset. Again, it works out well as I was hoping to get Ravelo a start, so it just works out well.”

Batting .255 on the season, Goldschmidt is in the midst of a 7-34 stretch and was hitless with a pair of strikeouts last night.

“Last night wasn’t his better night, as he would say,” Shildt acknowledged. “He hit a ball off the upper field deck in New York on Sunday to help us win a baseball game. He walked twice, scored another run. So he drove in two, scored two and we scored four so clearly helped us win that game. He’s a presence in the lineup that you can’t really put a figure on. I hope that’s what people appreciate. We have a presence in a lot of different areas of the lineup, he’s a big presence and he makes people better. There’s no number on the scoreboard that can validate that, it’s just real. So he makes his teammates around him better in the lineup.”

Besides Kolten Wong and Goldschmidt getting a break, catcher Yadier Molina and centerfielder Harrison Bader are also not in the starting lineup. Matt Wieters and Dexter Fowler will start in their place, with Jose Martinez in right field.

“Pretty sure Yadi’s not coming out this weekend in the Angels series, so a good day for him,” Shildt said. “Good day to get Bader a blow, just made sense across the board.”

The Cardinals are scheduled to activated pitcher Adam Wainwright (left hamstring) from the injured list tomorrow to start the series finale against the Marlins. Utility-man Yairo Munoz is expected to return from paternity leave.
