Out since July 16th, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Matt Carpenter has been activated from the Injured List and recalled pitcher Ryan Helsley from Memphis (AAA).
Originally sidelined by a right foot contusion, Carpenter spent nine games on rehab assignment to work on his swing and regain comfort at the plate. After starting 0-21, he finished 2-for-26 with seven walks combined between Springfield (5 games) and Memphis (4 games). In 81 games this season, Carpenter is batting .215 with 10 HR and 29 RBIs. He will bat lead-off and play third base in today’s game.
This is the sixth time Helsley has been recalled by St. Louis this season. In eight games, he has gone 0-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched. Helsley last pitched for Memphis on Wednesday, delivering three perfect frames with four strikeouts in the start. He has gone 0-0, 2.92 (4 ER/12.1 IP) to begin his MLB career.
With the return of Carpenter and Helsley, the Cardinals also optioned first baseman Rangel Ravelo to Memphis and designated pitcher Mike Mayers for assignment.
Appearing in 14 games this year for St. Louis, Ravelo collected a pair of pinch-hit doubles during last week’s home stand and drove in the first run of his big league career.
Mayers missed 83 games while on the Injured List this season with a right shoulder lat strain. He worked 1.1 innings of relief last night, allowing one hit and two runs.
