Carlos Is Back

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that pitcher Carlos Martinez has been activated off the injured list and will be on the active roster for tonight’s game against Texas.

Sidelined all season with a right shoulder cuff strain, Martinez just completed a five-appearance rehab assignment which totaled 6.2 innings between Peoria (A), Memphis (AAA) and Springfield (AA). He allowed one run on five hits, walked four and struck out six.

Carlos Martinez is expected to pitch out of the bullpen.

The team has also recalled pitcher Ryan Helsley from Memphis. The rookie right-hander threw 6.1 innings with just three hits allowed and seven strikeouts for a 2.84 ERA in three appearances earlier this season with the Cardinals. After being optioned back to the Redbirds on April 29, Helsley appeared in five games (including one start) and went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA (10.2 IP/4 ER) while striking out 12 batters. He was unscored upon in his four relief outings, covering 8.1 innings pitched, including 1.2 innings last night at San Antonio.

In corresponding moves, pitcher Dominic Leone was optioned to Memphis while fellow reliever Luke Gregerson was designated for assignment.

After allowing just two runs in his first 11 appearances, Leone (0-0) had recently struggled and allowed four hits and two earned runs against Atlanta on Thursday.

All total, Leone made 20 appearances this season and compiled an 8.02 ERA (21.1 IP) and 27 strikeouts.

Being activated off the injured list on May 4th, Gregerson also allowed a pair of runs against Atlanta on Thursday. Signed before last season, injuries limited Gregerson to a total of 23 appearances for St. Louis.
