The St. Louis Cardinals announced the signing of free-agent pitcher David Aardsma to a minor league contract on Wednesday morning. The right-hander was released from his non-roster invite by Cleveland last week after making six Cactus League appearances for the appearances in which he went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and six strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Aardsma, 32, was 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA for the New York Mets last season, striking out 36 batters in 39.2 innings pitched. He missed the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery but in the prior two seasons he recorded 69 saves for the Seattle Mariners.
With Jason Motte close, but not quite ready to open the season on the 25-man roster, this appears to provide the Cardinals a window to evaluate the veteran reliever–he has been assigned uniform #53.
