In their final exhibition game before the regular season opens on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals beat Memphis (AAA) 6-3 in the “Battle of the Birds” on Monday night at AutoZone Park.
Michael Wacha allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work for St. Louis. Adam Wainwright also threw 4.0 innings and took the loss for Memphis, the big blow coming on a three-run homer by Marcell Ozuna. Outfielder Adolis Garcia had an RBI for Memphis.

Following the game, St. Louis optioned left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb to the Memphis and re-assigned the following seven players to the minor leagues: RHP Chris Beck, LHP Tommy Layne, catchers Andrew Knizner and Francisco Peña, infielders Tommy Edman and Rangel Ravelo and outfielder Dylan Carlson.
The moves reduced the Cardinals active roster to the following 25 players:
Pitchers (12): Miles Mikolas, Jack Flaherty, Michael Wacha, Adam Wainwright, Dakota Hudson, Andrew Miller, Jordan Hicks, Dominic Leone, John Gant, Alex Reyes, John Brebbia, Mike Mayers
Catchers (2): Yadier Molina, Matt Wieters
Infielders (6): Matt Carpenter, Paul DeJong, Kolten Wong, Paul Goldschmidt, Yairo Munoz, Drew Robinson
Outfielders (5): Marcell Ozuna, Harrison Bader, Dexter Fowler, Jose Martinez, Tyler O’Neill
Pitchers Brett Cecil, Luke Gregerson and Carlos Martinez as well as infielder Jedd Gyorko and outfielder Justin Williams will begin the season on the injured list.
–The St. Louis-Memphis exhibition began with the 2018 Triple-A National Championship ring ceremony, as members of the Redbirds and Cardinals who participated in Memphis’ record-setting 2018 season received their rings in front of a sell-out crowd. Opening Night for Memphis is also on Thursday and the team will be hosting a free Fan Fest at AutoZone Park on Saturday from 3-6:00 p.m., which includes autographs from the 2019 Redbirds.
