(Busch Stadium) The St. Louis Cardinals will likely have even more rehab assignments beginning this weekend as Yairo Munoz and Michael Wacha are ready to join Carlos Martinez and Adam Wainwright on the comeback trail.
“Yairo’s going to go through batting practice and pregame today,” shared Mike Shildt. “Then he’ll go on rehab if everything checks out tomorrow and Sunday, likely in Springfield (AA) but not etched in stone.”
Munoz has been sidelined since August 11th with a right wrist sprain. He is eligible to return from the disabled list on August 21st.
The Springfield squad will have Martinez coming out of the bullpen tonight and Sunday as he prepares for his new relief role with St. Louis. He is still expected to join the team in LA after the two-game rehab stint.
Wacha follows Wainwright to Palm Beach (A+) where he will begin with two innings in the near future.
“Wainwright threw two really good innings last night with all of his pitches working, good velocity, feels good, so we’ll just update what his schedule looks like today or tomorrow,” said Shildt, adding that the velocity clocked in between 89-92mph.
–The Cardinals open tonight’s series against Milwaukee with a record of 66-56 and are 5.0 games out of first place in the NL Central and 1.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot.
