(Busch Stadium) The rehab assignments are growing in number, but the good news for the St. Louis Cardinals is that several of their injured players are nearing return…
Making his first rehab start, Michael Wacha will pitch for Palm Beach tonight on the road at Port Charlotte. He is scheduled for 25-35 pitches.
In Memphis, both Dominic Leone and John Brebbia will each throw one inning. Leone will be re-evaluated afterwards.
“After today, it looks like he will go in their bullpen and get out of that Spring Training-mode and get back into when the phone’s-going-to-ring kind of mode,” explained Mike Shildt. “Fine tune a few final things where he feels like he’s ready to compete at this level.”
Tonight in Springfield (AA), Yairo Munoz starts his rehab assignment and is slated for seven innings. Based on recovery, he will suit up again to play a full nine innings tomorrow. He will be joined by Adam Wainwright, who will start tomorrow, and Carlos Martinez, who will again come out of the bullpen.
Last night, Martinez threw 2.0 innings, 28 pitches, and allowed only a solo home run at Springfield.
“Good returns from him,” said Shildt. “Velocity, good. Recovery, good. Secondary pitches, positive. Everything was good.”
“I feel great,” agreed Martinez. “The 2nd inning was wonderful. I put all the balls in the strike zone. The location, I felt my command.”
Carlos intends to concentrate even more on getting the right feel for the proper movement on his pitches in tomorrow’s outing and will also ramp up his velocity.
“It was exactly the velocity I wanted,” said Martinez. “That was like my 85-90%.”
–Originally in the lineup hitting third and playing right field, Jose Martinez has been scratched from the lineup with right hip tightness. Tyler O’Neill will take his place.
