(Busch Stadium) The days on the disabled list appear to be drawing to an end for St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jedd Gyorko. Provided there are no setbacks, the expectation is he will be activated on Thursday.
“Yeah, I think that’s what everybody is looking towards,” said Mike Shildt. “Seems like a reasonable day. He took ground balls today and said he felt good. I think he’s hitting a little bit earlier…I think Thursday is a reasonable day.”
Out since August 29th with a left groin strain, Gyorko had been hitting .358 (19-53) with a 1.046 OPS in the two weeks prior to the injury.
“You’re talking about a guy that has played in all phases of the game really good baseball,” said Shildt. “Taking good at-bats, played really good defense, a sneaky good base runner as well and great teammate. It’s always good to have a guy like Jedd on the club and back in the lineup.”
Besides the ground balls, Gyorko did agility drills and ran in the outfield before the team’s pregame workout. He was joined by Yadier Molina (left hamstring), who also did some light jogging and hit in the cage.
“Every day has been a positive step forward for Yadi,” said Shildt. “We’re day to day, but we’re gaining ground on it.”
Pitcher Mike Mayers was activated from the disabled list and will be available out of the bullpen if needed in tonight’s game.
